The Skyline Drive/ Blue Ridge Parkway drive really takes one back in time. Natural Bridge is one of the most unspoiled areas and yes, the gift shop is a "trip" in itself. Consider a side trip to Lexington, Virginia - well worth the detour.

Route 11 (locally referred to simply as "Number 11) in the Valley is also worthy of inclusion as a "road trip" through unspoiled countryside, historical sites, and small towns. The Southern Kitchen in New Market is frozen in the fifties - with the best comfort food (before comfort food returned to favor)!

I have been to several of the points on the third trip, and have to agree that it is great. Acadia National Park is my favorite. I have been to most of the big national parks, and highly recommend Acadia. It is the only one I have been able to visit several times. I want to add some of the things I enjoyed while exploring the area.

After you wake up to see the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain go to Jordans Restaurant in Bar Harbor. They have the best Blueberry Pancakes in the world. It is a quant and quick diner style restaurant.

Another great morning activity is visiting the sand bar that connects Bar Harbor to Bar Island during low tide.

Jordans Pond is a great location to visit at lunch time. They have a quant outdoor lunch area, and it is a relaxing hike around the pond.

I want to toss Route 100 in Vermont into the ring of great summer drives. This road starts at the Massachusetts border and runes North all the way to Canada. Along the way you'll pass through most of the major ski towns of Vermont including the always classic Stowe. You'll also see some of the classic Vermont towns that have been frequently photographed as stereotypically New England, including Londonderry. The whole trip up can be done in a weekend, and I-87 I-91 are available to take you back down south at a much more rapid pace.

I've completed all of these drives & two of them more then once. The first & second will take a lot longer (time wise) than you expect, mostly due to single lane & very curvy roads. The third, thankfully has a few straight & quick sections.

I've driven the first most recently, from West Hollywood(Sunset Tower Hotel) to Carmel, if I recall correctly it took 13 hours.
