Some highly recommended drinks that just seem to go well with summer.

Porch. Beach. Deck. Patio. Frostily air-conditioned inner sanctum. Wherever you prefer to spend a few relaxing moments during the summer, having a perfectly mixed drink in hand is as important as being in a comfy chair. With that in mind, we’ve selected a few of our favorites. Like clothing, we like the classics—made with the best ingredients—and find ourselves returning to the things that never let us down. And, while none of them require vermouth, it is helpful to know how to mix your own. That way, as Mr. Allen points out, you won’t have to resort to outside help.
Dark and Stormy
This is the national drink of Bermuda, and, like the best literature, it’s a simple, unadorned and straightforward drink. It’s origins are somewhat murky, like trying to look through a Dark and Stormy in a glass, but it’s reasonable to assume that it was a marriage of two items the British Royal Navy was rationing to its sailors in the mid- to late-1800’s. For the classic version, you’ll need Gosling’s® Black Seal Rum and Barritt’s Ginger Beer from Bermuda. If you’re looking to sip something slightly spicy, this one’s for you.
• 2 oz. Gosling’s® Black Seal rum
• 8 oz. Barritt’s Ginger Beer
• Highball glass
Gin and Tonic
Another invention of the British, this time, though, it was the army of the British East India Company in India during the 18th century. The quinine added to their tonic water to combat malaria was so strong they used gin to make it go down easier. Great idea! A wonderfully simple concoction, the gin and tonic is sometimes seen as an “old man’s” drink. Well, the reason your grandfather drank it is because it’s a superbly crisp and refreshing cocktail. Your father probably discovered this and began drinking it. And you probably will as well. Jack Rudy Tonic Water is one of our favorites and they provided us with their recipe.
• ½ oz. Jack Rudy Tonic Water
• 2 oz. premium gin (We like either Bombay Sapphire® or Tanqueray®)
• Lime wedge
• Rocks glass
We love the margarita, but for us, the simple Paloma wins out. “The Dove” is actually a more popular drink in Mexico and, with its mix of tangy and tequila, it’s easy to see why. It’s a great drink to break out poolside, as all the ingredients can comfortably fit inside a small cooler. We had our first Paloma handed to us in a Mason jar while onboard a fishing charter out of Ensenada, so feel free to experiment with what you deliver yours in.
• 1 ½ oz. premium tequila (We’re partial to Patron® or Cuervo 1800®)
• ¾ oz. fresh lime juice
• 4 oz. of Mexican Squirt or Grapefruit Jarritos (or any grapefruit soda)
• Highball glass rimmed with salt (Mason jars can be substituted)
• Lime wedge
