Metal monotony.
What’s the rule for matching the metal in one’s outfit? Can you wear gold cuff links if your belt buckle or watch is silver? I’ve always followed the monochromatic route, but without an endless variety of accessories, the combinations are becoming a bit dull.—Robert, Charlotte, NC
Just like on the old Match Game game show, where if you wanted to win, you picked Richard Dawson every time, if you’re wearing metal cuff links, you should try to match your metal belt buckle every time. That’s just the way it is.
If you feel this monochromatic approach gets a little dull, consider silk knot cufflinks. They are a nice alternative and add a dash of colorful flair. If you’re firmly in the metal accessories camp however, we suggest looking at two-toned silver and gold cufflinks and belt buckles. They allow a little versatility. Other than that, though, you’re just going to have to grin and bear it, and look to other accessories to liven things up a bit, like pocket squares.
