Building a wardrobe on a budget. 6-7-2011

Banking on style.

How can I find quality clothing on a small budget?

This is a question a lot of guys have when they’re fresh out of college. Or when they suddenly find themselves in a work situation that requires a suit and tie. It may seem like a daunting task getting up to speed style-wise, but it doesn’t have to be if you keep one important thing in mind—begin with quality over quantity.

Investing in classic, versatile, well-made pieces, whether business or casual, is the way to go. This way you can build around them and they’ll always be in your wardrobe, rather than wearing out like less well-made clothing or going out of style like trendy pieces. Obviously, it also helps if the brand or brands you like have outlet stores. This allows you to get the quality you’re looking for at a reduced cost. And keep an eye out for end-of-season sales. There’s nothing wrong with stocking up on last season’s pieces, as long as the quality is there. And you can always get a job in retail. An employee discount can be a very attractive thing. Especially when it’s paired with that sport coat and sweater you’ve had your eyes on.
